Patrick Henry and Michael Holland

Patrick Henry represented many colonists in legal matters
Lickinghole Creek in Goochland County
Michael Holland was a prominent land owner in Goochland County during the early part of the 18th century. He had a rather large family, including his son, Michael Jr., to whom he bequeathed 800 acres on Lickinghole Creek when he died in 1747.  Of interest is a murder case in which Patrick Henry, hired by the elder,  represented Michael Jr.  It was a situation where the son appeared quite guilty and the father, deeply saddened, hired the best legal help. It was Henry's moving speech to the jury which included a sob story of the dear old father's love for his son.  Henry won many cases in court and was known for his superb oratory skills. The last will and testament of Michael Holland Sr. detailing the land bequests to all of his son is quite interesting, and found on Virginia Pioneers    It is beautifully written in the old colonial script and well-preserved. Young Patrick Henry represented many Virginia families in the courts and there is a good opportunity to discover documents which help to discern their names.  A little extra study into court house records and yourr family might be found to be one of them!
