Thomas Jefferson Signed a Document Appointing Judge

Alexander City records a historical document  It was found in Alexander City, Virginia signed by Thomas Jefferson, President of the United State,appointing George Gilphin as Judge of the Orphans Court of the Columbia District dated June 2, 1801.  It was also signed by James Madison, Secretary of State.

The document appears to be in the handwriting of the clerk of the probate court and is filed of record. To view it, login to Virginia Pioneers, click on the Wills and Estates category, then click on Alexander City.

The wills of other political figures in the district of Columbia during the early 19th century are also included. Historians and Genealogists should benefit from reading these old last wills and testaments.
